The origin of the use of the word Peplos as the title for a text can be traced back to early Greek cosmogony. Pherecydes (mid-sixth century BC) in his Heptamychos described the creation of the world as the marriage between the first beings, Zas (Zeus) and Chtonie, the latter of whom acquired the name Ge or Earth after she had been given as a wedding present from Zas a robe ‘large and fair’, on which he had woven Earth and Ocean. The primordial and sacred nature of this woven textile was confirmed and specified by Porphyry in the Cave of the Nymphs, where he said, ‘the ancients have spoken about heaven by the name of peplos as the cloak of the heavenly god’.2 It is also seen in the tradition of the presentation of a peplos to the goddess Athena during the annual Panathenaic Festival on which were woven episodes from early mythology.3 A further stage in the evolution of the literary peplos, the progression from textile to text, is evidenced in the use by later Greek and Latin writers of the word ‘weaving’ to describe the composition of a poem,4 a practice confirmed by Plato, who equated ‘mythologizing’ to ‘weaving in patterns’.5 In due course a Peplos, in a literary context, came to be seen as a collection of mythological texts in the same genre as those pieces of ‘indiscriminate learning’ (confusanea doctrina) listed by Aulus Gellius in the second century CE in the preface to his Attic Nights (Noctes Atticae, Praefatio, V), where, as testimony to the popularity of these compilations of miscellanies, he cites comparable exotic titles such as ‘The Horn of Amaltheia’, ‘Meads’, ‘The Honeycomb’ and others
